Summer day in Suomenlinna January 24, 2010

Posted by Kaisu in Helsinki.

Have you ever thought to visit Finland? Don’t you know what to do or where to go? Here is a one good piece of advice what you can do. It doesn’t matter whether summer or winter, you can visit Suomenlinna. Especially in the summer a historical maritime fortress is the most beautiful place in Helsinki.

Suomenlinna is a good place to spend a warm and sunny day in Helsinki. From there you can see almost the entire centre of Helsinki but still have a feeling of countryside. The green lawn of the islands and the surrounding blue sea are an incredible combination. In the background there is the wide pelagic and when you look another side you can see an urban landscape.

The wall and the wide pelagic

The place is full of history and it can be sensed. You can walk through the tunnels where the marines has walked once. You can have a picnic with your friends on the wall or take a picture with old cannon which has once protected Finland from attackers. You can also swim in the sea that surrounds Suomenlinna or you can be disturbed by hungry seagulls. Be careful with your lunch, they want to eat it too.

In Suomenlinna there is something to all kind of people. If you want to visit there in summer, I suggest to take swimsuit, camera, binoculars (to watch for birds), picnic basket and flashlight (to have an adventure in the tunnels) with you. Never can know what you will need. And if you want to be in a picture with your friend just ask some nice Finn to take the picture. They don’t probably offer it themselves, but will take it with pleasure if you have the courage to ask it.

It has come some kind of tradition to visit Suomenlinna every summer with my friends. Some day we just decide to go there. Everyone takes their own flashlights with them if they remember (I always forget) and cameras. For lunch we buy fresh peas and strawberries from Kauppatori before we sail to the Suomenlinna. We spend almost whole day there. We take a lot of photos and eat our lunch. We have an ice-cream moment and we just have fun. So if you are bored some nice summer day and the only thing to do is sitting at the computer, FORGET IT! Take a couple of friends with you and go to Suomenlinna. The experience will be much better there than sitting at home. Don’t you believe me? Go and try yourself!

And here is great video from trip to Suomenlinna. It isn’t so sunny day, but the scenery is same. Gourgeous and unspeakable.

If the video doesn’t work, try this.

I don’t really have much interest in Suomenlinna at all. To me it just exists and I’ve never been there myself. But your text still managed to make it interesting because you told about your own experiences. I’ve never even thought about going there just for fun! Your English is very good and easy to read. I like how you described the environment too.

The pictures and the video merge well into the text and made it more interesting.

There were some small grammar mistakes, like “old cannon which has once protect Finland from attackers” – should be has protected. But overall the text is understandable and there really isn’t much mistakes.
